Sat 2 Feb 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

The first Sappho night was held in Wellington last month After a drought of events for women in most areas, an avalanche of ladies’ nights is on the way, including Lipstick, which gets rolling in Auckland tonight. Lipstick will be held at the newly-gay dubbed Switch Bar on K’ Rd, which is owned by the squad behind Family Bar. It’s located on the opposite side of the road at 309 K’ Rd. Lipstick is being run by the team which brought Auckland the popular Flirt nights and will have five editions: Sat 2nd Feb, Sat 27th April, Sat 15th June, Sat 21st September and Sat 14th December. In Wellington Sappho has had its first edition at Bar Medusa in January and is returning monthly, with the next instalment due on Feb 22. Organiser Steph Miller says the first event was packed and “awesome” and the second edition will begin with a band or two and then a DJ late into the night with drink specials. In Christchurch gay and bi women have plenty to do; She nights have been held regularly, which you can find more information about here, and a Femme night is also coming up, while local woman Jill Stevens is considering planning a second Beavers event after a smashing debut during Christchurch Pride. Back in Auckland, Dykes on Mics is continuing every first Sunday of the month at Garnet Station. Numerous women’s events are being planned for the Pride Festival, including the ever-popular Heroes out West, the Unity Pride Dance and The L Dance, a softball tournament, plus performances from Maree Sheehan, all-girl Johnny Cash tribute band The Johnnys and Dykes on Mics regulars The Muse.
