US: 'Gay' dog will not now be put down

Fri 1 Feb 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

Elton A dog dumped at a Tennessee animal shelter because its owner thought it was gay has narrowly escaped being put down. The young bulldog-cross was seen to hump another male dog "so his owner threw him away because he refuses to have a ‘gay’ dog!" a local dog rescue organisation said. He was dumped at a rabies compound and slated to be put down. However, a veterinary technician heard about the dog and adopted him, naming him Elton. She says he has a friendly, sweet nature but there is some concern his previous owner had been allowing dog-fight situations. It is likely that the humping was natural part of a dominance display often seen in male dogs. Actual homosexual behaviour such as same-sex pair bonding has been recorded in over 1,000 animal species.
