US: Boy Scouts considering removing gay ban

Wed 30 Jan 2013 In: International News View at Wayback

File photo Boy Scouts of America may end its ban on gay members and allow local clubs to decide their own policy. "The BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," spokesman Deron Smith has told Reuters. "The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic or educational organizations that oversee and deliver Scouting to determine how to address this issue.” The Boy Scouts won a 5-4 US Supreme Court ruling allowing it to ban gay members in 2000, but has come under increasing public pressure in recent years. They include Zach Wahls, an Eagle Scout with two lesbian mothers, and Jennifer Tyrrell, a lesbian mother from Ohio who was given the boot from her roles as a Scout den leader and treasurer.
