McVicar's crime and marriage link slammed

Wed 30 Jan 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News

Garth McVicar A justice campaigner’s claim that “crime will rise if gay couples are allowed to marry” is being described as abhorrent, uninformed and hateful. The Queer Avengers has expressed concern about the comments from Garth McVicar, Sensible Sentencing Trust, as part of his submission to the Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill. “As someone who lives with the aftermath of a homicide and having been a dyke of 35 years I find McVicar's comments abhorrent, uninformed and hateful,” says Ky Skellet, an associate of the group. She questions whether McVicar has any evidence to support his claims, and says he needs to remember what he says reflects on the Sensible Sentencing Trustl. “I suggest McVicar engages his brain before he opens his mouth and remember Garth that gay people living in the shadow of a homicide do not need to be further victimised by your homophobia."
