Vinegar Hill anti-gay incident didn't happen, say police

Mon 14 Jan 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Rumours circulating around Wellington that police were called to an incident at the Vinegar Hill campground after a man became agitated, waving a machete and spouting anti-gay sentiment, are not correct according to police. Senior Sergeant Nigel Allan of the Fielding police says police were called to several incidents at the campground which is the scene of the country's biggest concentration of glbti campers over the Christmas/New Year period. The gay campers tend to congregate at one end of the DOC site slightly separate from other campers. "We attended several relatively minor disorder incidents primarily on the 30th and 31st," says Allan, "but none of those involved anything anti-gay." He says the police have fielded several enquiries about the supposed incident. Allan suspects the rumour may be connected to an incident when police arrested a man with a bayonet who was already subject to an arrest warrant in connection with a prior burglary in the Manawatu area.
