Complaints about Pope billboard dismissed

Thu 10 Jan 2013 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The national advertising watchdog has thrown out multiple complaints about a billboard depicting the Pope marrying a gay couple. The Advertising Standards Authority says it’s unlikely to cause widespread offence, and has dismissed four complaints about it. Complainant B Pender said the billboard offended him as a Christian. "It is attempting to imply that the Catholic Church and The Vatican condone same sex marriage despite no formal communication of said claim.'' The ASA acknowledged the offence caused to the complainants, but has found the billboard did not reach the threshold to be said to cause widespread offence in light of prevailing community standards. "Neither did it breach the due sense of responsibility to consumers and society.''
