There's been a lot of talk of these ‘fringe' issues.” Logie said it showed a level of meanness and ignorance that was “jaw dropping”. “To reduce my questions about the state's responsibility to protect transgender prisoners from sexual assault to a ‘fringe issue' is just offensive,” she told us. 8. Mills "extremely anxious" prior to his death We covered the Coroner's inquest into the death of Glenn Mills, the man accused of purposely infecting a string of sex partners with HIV. It emerged he was extremely anxious about the publicity surrounding his case, and threats from other inmates, prior to taking his own life in his Auckland prison cell. Mills was due to appear in court on the day of his death and the inquest heard that during his time in prison he had been “sad and worried”. Our follow up about the reactions to their “time for Jesus to come out” billboard this month was the seventh most-read story this year. Reverend Clay Nelson said the billboard presented the challenge to think about Jesus as fully human whose growing up would have involved the same range of character possibilities, and even sexuality, as the rest of us. “Some scholars have tried to make the case that he might have been gay,” Nelson said. “But it is all conjecture. Maybe gay, maybe not. Does it matter?” 6. Germaine Greer glitter-bombed by Queer Avengers In March those cheeky Queer Avengers glittered bombed a visiting Germaine Greer in Wellington. She has a history of outing and denouncing transwomen, even describing them as “ghastly parodies” of womanhood. “Transphobic feminism is so 20th Century,” said Stacey of the Queer Avengers. “It wasn't okay then and it's not okay now. Women's liberation must mean the right to refuse imposed gender roles, to fight for diverse gender expression.” 5. The prank was to have someone telling their spouse they were ending their marriage, live on air. The winner, a woman named Sam, told the station things hadn’t been good with her husband “Andy”. When they called “Andy” a woman answered and said "No, this isn't Andy. It wasn't Andy to start with you f***ing idiots," said a woman who then identified herself as Sam's wife, Amber.
