Hot shots sought for Wellington tennis tournament

Fri 14 Dec 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Tennis players of all abilities, gender identities and sexualities are invited to participate in the inaugural Hot Shots Tennis Tournament to be held in Wellington on the 26th and 27th of January. Organisers Michael Briden, Geoff and Kevin Haunui say the aim of the tournament is to provide a fun, camp and social event, with a hint of competition, for Wellington’s LGBTI tennis community. They have formed Hot Shots Tennis Wellington as a social club to provide a focal point for Wellington’s LGBTI tennis community and to facilitate the tournament. The event will coincide with a rainbow weekend of sport in the Capital, which includes the Different Strokes Swim Meet, Front Runners Wellington run, and Ten Pin Bowling. Kevin Haunui says Hot Shots is keen to attract LGBTI tennis fans from Wellington and further afield -nationally and even internationally. “The Hot Shots tournament promises to provide a unique concept for a tennis tournament where all players, irrespective of gender or sexual classification will compete to be the overall winner,” he says. “A handicapping system will be applied based on skill level relative to others in the tournament.” There will also be a special dinner as part of the rainbow weekend of sport. A Facebook event page has been established and you can contact Hot Shots here hotshotstenniswellington@gmail.com
