Rainbow crossings coming to Sydney's Oxford St

Tue 11 Dec 2012 In: International News View at Wayback

A Sydney Morning Herald mock-up of what the crossings could look like Sydney’s Oxford St is set to get rainbow crossings, following in the footsteps of Los Angeles’ gay hub West Hollywood. The City of Sydney has voted unanimously to put the gay pride colours across two major crossings to recognise the precinct's cultural status, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. It will cost AU$75,000 and be done in time for Mardi Gras in February. The crossings will be installed on a trial basis, which, if successful, could become a “permanent, visual acknowledgement of the significance of Oxford Street to the GLBT community,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore says. The plan will need approval from roads authorities and a risk evaluation will be carried out before it is allowed to proceed. A report on the trial will be delivered to the council next September.
