Street collectors on World AIDS Day The amount raised by the World AIDS Day street collection just over a week ago is expected to be known in just over a week's time. A spokesperson for the organisers, the NZ AIDS Foundation, says the collections on Friday went "very well. We had a good turn-out of volunteer collectors and probably the best turn-out of volunteers from corporate partners, particularly Accor Hotels, MAC Cosmetics and New Zealand Management Academies that we’ve ever had." He says the NZAF is still getting collection buckets in from individual collectors around the country "so it’s a little bit early to announce a total yet, but we aim to announce that over the next week or so." Last year the total was not finally calculated until three months after the collection, something the NZAF is eager to avoid this time round. "There definitely won’t be the delay in announcing that we had last year." Proceeds from the collection, after admin costs, are split between the national Wellness Fund to assist financially stressed people fighting HIV/AIDS and the NZAF's own HIV support work. Most of the thousands of people living with HIV in New Zealand are gay and bi men.
