Family rolling out red carpet for World AIDS Day

Thu 29 Nov 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

The gayer and redder the top the better this weekend, Miss Ribena says! Auckland’s gay nightspot Family Bar is marking World AIDS Day this weekend by holding a double-whammy of events on Friday and Saturday nights, and all are invited to come along with their spare cash to donate. A gold coin or a note will get you entry into the K’ Rd venue on Friday and Saturday nights, with the proceeds going to Body Positive, Positive Women and the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. On Friday night the New Zealand franchise spin-off of The Rednex, the band known for the 1994 hit Cotton Eye Joe, will perform. There will also be six drag shows. On Saturday night the infamous Family I See Red fundraiser will return, with hostess Miss Ribena urging people to wear red – and really camp it up with feather boas, wigs and whatever else their imaginations can conjure up. There will be drag shows at midnight and 1AM. In Wellington, there will be a Strike Out For AIDS at the Lanes Bowling Lounge on Sunday night, with all proceeds going to the World AIDS Day appeal. The $20 ticket allows unlimited bowling for the evening.
