Rare tie in NZAF Trust Board election result

Sat 24 Nov 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

In a rare outcome of voting a Special General Meeting of the NZ AIDS Foundation will have to be called after two candidates tied for third place in the election of three new Trust Board members. Simon Randall A sparsely attended Annual General Meeting this afternoon, with only ten members showing up, was advised that Auckland lawyer David Friar and Auckland local body politician Simon Randall have been voted onto the Board. David Friar Tied in third place in the voting - just 63 people voted despite a number of voting methods being available including postal forms and online voting - were Tauranga infectious diseases physician Massimo Giola and long-time gay community worker Vaughan Meneses who has recently relocated from Auckland to Wellington. The constitution of the NZAF states that in the event of a tie another poll of the members must be taken to hopefully split the tie and this must be done in conjunction with a Special General Meeting. Trust  Board secretary Virginia Cattell says it will take at least a month to line up another voting process and to convene a Special General Meeting. The voting of two Aucklanders onto the board to some degree corrects what has in recent years been an almost totally Wellington-based board. Board Chair Andrew Sweet thanked former chair Alastair Cameron and Board members Kaine Thompson and Christian Bimbola-Ogbah who have all stood down from the board.
