QWU's drag world record beaten by Canadians

Thu 22 Nov 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

The Guinness World Record long-held by New Zealand’s Queen of the Whole Universe for the most drag performers on stage at once has been broken in Canada. Pride in the Park Niagara achieved the feat in June, with 39 participants: Queen of the Whole Universe creator Jonathan Smith has written to the group to offer his congratulations, from the "rainbow family" in New Zealand. “We broke the world record in 2008 in Auckland, New Zealand with our production of Queen of the Whole Universe and then once again we took the Guinness Crown in 2009 in Wellington, New Zealand,” he says. “What an honour that QWU has held this Guinness Crown since 2008. That is five years of glory, of sparkle, of sequin, of promotional events around the world. Still waiting for a call from Oprah!” He urges Pride in the Park Niagara to “wear the Guinness Crown with pride and glory”, but warns “we will be back!” Smith is in the process of turning the pageant into a stage musical.
