Canterbury’s Big Bear Weekend will be back in 2013 after this year’s registrations “way exceeded” organisers’ expectations. One of the event’s hosts Richard Tankersley says the team is delighted with the support they received. “Registrations way exceeded our expectations, the venue owners and managers were outstanding, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.” He says the highlights were a day trip to Hanmer, a screening of the Chris Banks documentary Men Like Us and the Mr Canterbury Bear show, which was won by Paul Newby. “Keeping this group going is really important,” Tankersley says of Bears Christchurch. Our regular activities serve to reduce social isolation and increase social cohesion amongst our group of gay and bisexual men in Christchurch, and the weekend has been the icing on the cake. “We'll definitely run BBW2013 next year.”
