France: Massive anti-equality protests held

Sun 18 Nov 2012 In: International News

At least 70,000 people have taken to the streets in Paris, clad in pink and carrying pink balloons, to protest plans to legalise same-sex marriage and adoption. There have also been demonstrations in the cities of Lyon, Toulouse and Marseille. The protestors included Catholic groups and other backers of traditional family rights. The protests come as French President Francois Hollande has promised to introduce marriage equality, moving on from civil unions which are already legal. The head of the French Council of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois, recently described gay marriage as "the ultimate deceit". BBC reports the protesters in Paris wore pink T-shirts and scarves and carried pink balloons emblazoned with images of a man and woman holding two children's hands. Thousands took part in counter rallies in support of marriage equality and adoption rights.
