The Catholic Church is positioning itself as “the lone critic of modernity” on the issue of marriage equality. The Vatican’s newspaper L'Osservatore Romano has run a front page stating: "One might say the church, at least on this front, has been defeated. But that's not the case." It says Catholics are putting up a “valiant fight” to uphold church teaching in the face of "politically correct ideologies invading every culture of the world". "The church is called to present itself as the lone critic of modernity, the only check ... to the breakup of the anthropological structures on which human society was founded," it says. Catholic teaching is that homosexual acts are "intrinsically disordered,” and that straight marriage is the foundation for society.
