Wellington's new weekends: after5

Tue 13 Nov 2012 In: Events View at Wayback View at NDHA

An entirely new GLBT social event series is coming to Wellington in the form of after5, which its creators promise will bring something different and ever-evolving to the city’s social scene. The comedy and event management team Andy Harness and Cathy Sheat of Tomboi Productions have been asked by the owners of venue Emperor’s Bathhouse to run after5, following the success of their recent Venus Envy Vaudeville. The Bathhouse has space perfect for social events and Harness says its owners want to use it to bring the community together. “Wellington has very little available when it comes to a mid-capacity sized space that is flexible enough to cater for low-key intimate groups as well as host dance parties, shows, fund-raisers, cabarets etc,” she says. “We have lovely pubs but nowhere our community can enjoy events together as a whole. The downstairs venue at 5 Wigan St ticks all these boxes and has been somewhat under-utilised. “We're aiming to change that.” Harness says she and Sheat are excited, as they get to flex their creative muscle, which is something they “adore” doing. “We'd love after5 to be the venue our GLBTI+ community considers the place to go for something a little different on a Friday or Saturday night,” she says. “Variety is the spice of life as is the mantra of after5. Friday and Saturday nights will cater for everyone by hosting a range of different events; some sexuality 'specific' some all-inclusive, some chillaxed, some high-voltage... it's all happening and it's finally happening here in Wellington!” The plan is for two major events to be held each month, one planned by the after5 team and the other planned by an outside group. In between those two major events there will be regular Friday and Saturday night events. Harness is encouraging the community, and its straight friends, to make the most of the space being offered. after5 will operate on Friday and Saturday nights (from 5pm - 3am) 5 Wigan St, Wellington (the Emperor's Bathhouse Venue). All are invited to join the “Queen” as she appears at the 'Right Royal Re-Opening' grand launch party on Friday 16th November. $15 on the door. Saturday 17th November is Pool Party night where you can have a dip in the spa pool with friends or play a game of pool (there'll be a Queen/King of the table competition).
