National MP silent after trans "fringe" outburst

Mon 5 Nov 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Maggie Barry National MP Maggie Barry appears to have ducked for cover over her description of transgender rights as “fringe” issues. Claiming the Green Party rarely spoke in Parliament on environmental issues, she referred to Green MP Jan Logie’s advocacy on trans issues, asking “What’s your favourite Ms Logie? Ahh … sex change people going into prisons. There’s been a lot of talk of these ‘fringe’ issues.” Despite an indication she would respond to questions about her comments, ensuing attempts to contact her have been fruitless. Logie described the comments as jaw-dropping and offensive, while Agender has offered to meet with the MP to enlighten her on trans issues.
