Weekly marriage meetings underway in capital

Wed 24 Oct 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

File photo Community momentum is growing in the battle for marriage equality ahead of Friday’s closing date for submissions. Meetings are being held every Wednesday night in Wellington by The Campaign for Marriage Equality, and will continue until 19 December, then restart again on 16 January. Chair for the meetings Rawa Karetai says the group believes we should live in a country without discrimination and bullying. “The current law discriminates against a certain number of people in New Zealand and it's just not right,” Karetai says. “A safe passage of this bill would help the acceptance of all queer people. Being discriminated by people is one thing but being discriminated by our state and legislation is much worse. “We want to send a message to the select committee to encourage acceptance and that we support this bill. We strongly recommend that other people submit to the select committee also.” The meetings are held at Anvil House (Level 1, 138-140 Wakefield Street) from 6.30PM until 8PM every Wednesday night.
