Fri 19 Oct 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

David Nepia Carroll A man accused of defrauding a string of gay people and businesses after winning them over with his charm is pleading not guilty to nearly 60 pages of charges. David Nepia Carroll, 41, is to appear in court in December for a status hearing on the multitude of charges his defence has today indicated he will fight. They range from the theft of a brand new Audi from a gay couple, to taking three other cars, cash, credit and eftpos card, withdrawing cash unlawfully, taking laptops and clothes, and leaving gay stays and other accommodation providers across the North Island without paying. Carroll, who was nabbed in an Auckland bar in August after some quick detective work by the son of Black Sands Lodge’s owner, is alleged to have won people over with his stories of his estranged Greek husband and being a professional chef. He appeared in Auckland District Court today via video link, clad in a grey sweatshirt, and shorts and jandals. He kept his head down most of the time, and spoke softly when he replied to questions from the judge. Along with the almost 60 pages of charges he already faces, 14 further charges have been laid, on which Carroll will appear in court again in November.
