NZ teen's "duck takeover" letter goes world-wide

Wed 17 Oct 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

A home-schooled North Canterbury teenager’s letter to the editor of a local newspaper warning ducks could take over the world if same-sex marriage eventuates is being picked up across the globe. The Huffington Post, MSN, On Top Magazine and Philadelphia Magazine are among the foreign media and blog sites which have shared the letter to the Northern Outlook from 14-year-old Jasmin Harrison. She writes: "If homosexuality spreads, it can cause human evolution to come to a standstill. It could threaten the human position on the evolutionary ladder, and say, ducks, could take over the world. Ducks always nest in pairs and we if allow same-sex marriage, then the ducks will have evolved further than we have. We will be in danger of all being equal, with ducks more equal than us." She adds: "If you believe in evolution, you can't be in favour of homosexuality, or the ducks will get you in the end." Chicago Pride says “the letter is either a clever hoax, or one of the most persuasive arguments against homeschooling that I've ever encountered,” while The Huffington Post, described her letter as a "bizarre anti-gay rant". Harrison’s mother has told The Press the letter was a homeschool project and “Jasmin would probably say that this kind of response is in God's hands now and just carry on.”
