Augustus and Varner One of the WNBA’s most talented players, who is openly lesbian, is taking a stand against a move to ban same-sex marriage in the constitution of the state she represents in basketball. Seimone Augustus is a WNBA champion, two-time Olympic gold medallist. She is planning to marry her partner LaTaya Varner, but a Minnesota wedding could be in jeopardy due to the proposed amendment, to be voted on next month, defining marriage as only between one man and one woman. Augustus remains hopeful same-sex marriage will ultimately be legalised however: "I'm hoping that it passes 'cause then we're able to have a nice wedding here and actually be able to legally do it here instead of having to go a few hours away to Iowa or somewhere like that to have it done," Augustus has told AP. "You want to be able to do it in a city that, for one, has embraced me and been like my second home and is her home - this is where she's from - to be able to share a special moment in Minnesota history." Augustus also conceded it’s easier to be a lesbian in the WNBA than it would for a gay man in the NBA. "Everyone thinks that the WNBA is one big lesbo party anyway," she said. "So I think the coming out process isn't as tough for us because people already expect it." Here is video from the Associated Press of her talking about the issue and her own planned marriage:
