Glittering GABA auction raises more than $26k

Mon 15 Oct 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Craig Hoyle and Jan Logie at the GABA Deluxe Auction The Gay Auckland Business Association’s charitable auction has raised more than $26,000, with a two week stay at a villa in Bali donated by a past GABA President proving the hot ticket item on the night. The fortnight at a private and secluded villa within five minutes of central Ubud went for $1,650. It was donated by Glenn Sims, a former GABA President and TV producer who is now based in Indonesia. A stunning hand-finished glitter screenprint by artist Reuben Paterson sold for $1,500 after a bidding frenzy. Other big sellers were a four course dinner with US Ambassador David Huebner and his spouse, who was in attendance, Duane McWaine, which went for $1,350. Dinner at the home of MP Louisa Wall sold for $1,000, while champagne at Harbourside with fellow Labour MP Maryan Street went for $950. The melodic politician followed up last year’s KD Lang number with a rendition of Hallelujah, to great applause. While more than $26,000 was shelled out by generous bidders, that figure is not final, as it excludes the silent auctions and raffle donations. The night featured plenty of laughs courtesy of witty auctioneer Michelle Maitland, plus a guest appearance from Ali Mau, who donated a tour of TVNZ’s newsroom and the Fair Go set which went for $500. She was asked whether it included a look at her dressing room by a table of women and quipped “yes, but it’s really not that glamorous.”
