Aus Speaker resigns over texts to gay staffer

Wed 10 Oct 2012 In: International News View at Wayback

Peter Slipper Australia’s Speaker has quit over a scandal involving lurid and misogynistic text messages sent to a gay male staffer, who is claiming sexual harassment. "Lucy is very available and keen! Could turn you from your wayward ways," is one of hundreds of text messages Peter Slipper sent to adviser James Ashby. A Federal Court case brought by Ashby reveals Slipper repeatedly made allusions to his staffer’s sexuality, inquiring whether he had "fuckkbuddies" and asking him for drinks at gay bars. Slipper also made references to women's genitalia, such as comparing them to mussels without shells, and sent one text saying: ''Funny how we say that a person is a c..t when many guys like c..ts.'' Slipper last night resigned as Speaker and apologised, saying: “A number of these text messages refer to women and nothing excuses their content.” The independent has represented the Fisher seat in Queensland since 1993. He now moves to the backbenches.
