Lord compares marriage campaigners to Nazis

Wed 10 Oct 2012 In: International News View at Wayback

Lord Carey The former Archbishop of Canterbury has told a rally that Britain risks becoming a totalitarian and could go the way of Nazi Germany if same-sex marriage is legalised. Lord Carey told the gathering in Birmingham that Christians had so far been "too timid" in their opposition to the government's plans. He also warned that those of faith could even begin to experience the persecution endured by the Jews in Nazi Germany if they dared to speak out if same-sex marriage laws were passed. "Remember that the Jews in Nazi Germany, what started it against them was when they were called names, that was the first stage towards that totalitarian state," he said. "It's part of a slippery slope where the unintended consequences could be shocking." Ben Summerskill, the chief executive of Stonewall, Britain’s largest gay rights charity has responded: “Gay people remember all too well what happened in the Holocaust. The fact that Lord Carey is making such distressing comments rather suggests he knows he hasn’t any good arguments against equal marriage”.
