Urge's masks charity night in 2011, one of the many events it's hosted over the years. “September 2005 – Crazy Frog by Axel F was number one in New Zealand, Helen Clark’s Labour had just hung onto power and a small piece of real estate on K Road changed hands,” is the scene-setter of Urge’s owners as they get ready to celebrate seven years running the gay men’s venue. Paul Heard and Alan Granville says it’s a big milestone to achieve. “There have been some very tough times as people’s drinking habits have certainly changed over the last seven years. But we keep plugging away and thanks to our great staff and DJs our customers keep returning,” Granville says. “We have had to diversify to keep going and our dance parties and Bear New Zealand events have certainly kept things interesting.” On Saturday the bar will host a big celebration party. The night will also act as a final fundraiser for this year’s annual Prostate Cancer appeal, Blue September. “We will be auctioning off some very limited edition signed calendars which were created especially for the month by photographer DREAMONIX and we even have a couple of the very hunky models around,” Granville says. The bar will be open from 9pm with bubbles for early arrivals.
