At the launch of Legalise Love Waikato (picture by Camera Man) Hamilton Pride organisers are heartened at the strength their community has shown with its support for what they say was another very successful week. The 2012 event saw everything from brain-awakening discussions to a Zumba and line dancing display in Garden Place. The women had a night to themselves at the ever popular quiz night, when the men enjoyed some films hosted by local gay men’s social group Mooloo Mix. There was also a “Stich-n-Butch” night, a rainbow “Roller-Tron”, a youth ball and the aforementioned line-dancing and Zumba display in Garden Place in which the group’s enormous rainbow flag was picked up by TV One’s news weather camera. Stefan Mutter from Hamilton Pride says there are some excellent people in the Waikato queer community who look after the gay community’s well-being, social lives and work against discrimination. “I think the multitude and diversity of people organising and attending Pride Week showed how strong the community down here is,” he says. “We are a smaller centre in queer terms, but we are working towards Hamilton becoming the 'gay capital of NZ' as TV ONE put it last year in their breakfast show.” Mutter says Hamilton Pride is gathering more and more momentum every year. “For example, this year for the very first time Hamilton
