Members of the Sydney Convicts after they won the Bingham Cup Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is backing a bid for Sydney to host the 2014 edition of global gay rugby championship the Bingham Cup – but she is still opposed to gay couples being allowed to marry. Gillard officially endorsed the bid by the titleholders the Sydney Convicts in an online message. “Australia is a sports-loving nation which also has an abiding commitment to diversity and mutual respect,” she says. “The vibrant city of Sydney is the perfect location for the Bingham Cup, and the Sydney Convicts, Australia’s first gay rugby union club, are the perfect hosts.” Former Wallabies captain John Eales and diver Matthew Mitcham also appear in the video
