Auckland's Proud Mary to bow out with a bang

Tue 11 Sep 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Philippa will be one of the guest DJs After two and a half years of entertaining Auckland’s more alternative women, Proud Mary will host its final ever night on Friday 21 September. After bringing crowds acts like MEN, Zowie, MayaVanya, Janine and the Mixtape, RANDA and MY!OH!, the promoters are moving overseas and feel it is best to bring it to an end whilst the calibre is still high. "Proud Mary has grown into more than a club night, but a real voice within the queer community" I'm going to miss all aspects of it," says promoter Katija Vlatkovich. Proud Mary's Last Dance will feature New Zealand DJ, Phillipa. “This first lady of disco spins everything from nu disco and indie dance through to experimental house grooves and jackin tech squarely aimed at the dance floor,” Vlatkovich says. “She has been in the game for over 10 years hosting a very popular George FM set plus being the brains behind the popular Chicago Disco parties.” Local lesbian spinner DJ Marjorie Sinclair will grace the decks for the first time, as well as Proud Mary veteran, The Larnach Monster. There will also be a special guest burlesque performance by Queerlesque creator Phlossy Roxx. Vlatkovich says the event will go out with a bang. She says while nothing is set in stone for next year, there is potential for a comeback. "With Pride happing next year in February there could be a potential event. For now this is sadly the end of a very cool event". Proud Mary's Last Dance Friday 21st September 4:20, 373 K'RD 10pm $10
