Love has been in the air at Gay Ski Week

Fri 31 Aug 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The happy couple! An action-packed Gay Ski Week has had everything from a Remarkables civil union to a sky dive for equality. The recreated Queenstown event hosted the nuptials of Australian couple Sandra Gibney and Jo Christie, who won the ceremony in a radio competition. Tired of waiting for the Australian Government to legalise same-sex marriage, they have joined on The Remarkables instead. The New South Wales couple has been together for more than 11 years and Sandra says it was a “sensational” and “amazing” way for her and Jo to celebrate their hugely special day. “We know it was all about having some fun, but everything about the day was so personal. “We’ve had the rings in the safe at home waiting for the Australian Government to legalise gay marriage, but we’re still waiting for that day to come.” DNA Gay Ski Week event organisers Sally and Mandy Whitewoods said they were “privileged” to be Sandra and Jo’s witnesses on the day. Sally Whitewoods said it was a real coup to pull off this hugely significant event. “It was wonderful to welcome our Australian friends to Queenstown and be able to organise their very special day, a great start to our Gay Ski Week.” Mr Gay World Andreas Derleth is also in town and joined with former Mr Gay New Zealand Aaron Comis in a sky dive for equality: Andy Derleth ahead of his sky dive for equality Major parties during the week have included a Rocky Horror Night at Dorothy Brown's Cinema in Arrowtown, a Casino Royale gala night at Skyline and the Miss Ribena hosted karaoke at Sky City. Sally Whitewoods says there has been great feedback on the week so far. “The wedding was incredible and everyone made an amazing effort with the outfits at Rocky Horror, and the Opening Party was a blast. “Guests have said it was the best Rocky Horror interactive participation show they’ve been to. In fact, I think the men look better in high heels and stockings than I do!” Gay Ski Week will have a “Friday Frolics” party tonight before the big finale, a Mystery Dance Party at World Bar tomorrow night.
