National MP’s turnaround a pinnacle moment

Thu 30 Aug 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Paul Hutchison National MP Paul Hutchison revealed in last night’s debate he’d changed his mind and decided to vote for marriage equality, in what Bill author Louisa Wall says was the “most poignant moment” of the night. "I cannot construct a strong enough intellectual, moral, health or even spiritual argument against it,” the Hunua MP, who is a former obstetrician and gynaecologist, stated. Dr Hutchison’s final decision came following a late-night discussion with Wall on Tuesday night, after earlier in the day he’d stated he was going to vote against the Bill. He said after also speaking with lesbian Labour MP Maryan Street and gay Green MP Kevin Hague, he became deeply concerned about the high suicide rate among GBLT teenagers. "From a health perspective, we should be doing everything possible to create an environment in New Zealand where everyone feels they are included," Dr Hutchison said.
