A new committee elected to oversee popular Wellington event Out in the Square promises it has a strong future. After beginning life in Newtown, the annual gay and lesbian fair is held at Civic Square every January. In 2012 it attracted an estimated 15,000 people, who sampled delicious treats and trinkets from over 50 stalls and were entertained by a wide range of performers and audience favourites like the Handbag Hurl. “The new committee, voted in at Saturday’s Annual General Meeting, is full of passion for Wellington’s most visible rainbow event” says Out in the Square Spokesperson, Virginia Hopkins-Burns. “The new team will ensure Out in the Square continues to offer the rainbow community an event which prizes visibility, positivity, and which channels the passion and culture of our vibrant people and community here in Wellington.” Preparations for 2013’s Fair have already started, and individuals and organisations that want to be involved should contact Out in the Square immediately. “This is an open call to be part of the action,” Hopkins-Burns says. “If you are interested in performing, being a Fair Fairy (volunteer), hosting a stall, or a business looking for promotional opportunities, get in touch now.”
