File photo The first reading of Louisa Wall’s marriage equality bill is pencilled in for Wednesday 29 August, with a march and rally being planned in Wellington which will culminate in what’s hoped to be a “packed” public gallery at Parliament. “It's time to celebrate the marriage equality bill being introduced to parliament and we want to see as many people there as possible on the day where the first reading of Louisa Wall's bill should take place,” say the team behind the event, which is a result of LegaliseLove hosted meetings on marriage equality. “Let's welcome the bill into parliament and celebrate the opportunity New Zealand has been given to take a step towards greater equality. This is an issue that affects all New Zealanders, so come along regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity.” The event will begin at Civic Square at midday with a march to Parliament, where a rally will be held at 1PM. “We also encourage people to come back around 3pm to enter the galleries in Parliament - hopefully we can get them packed,” the group says. Supporters of the marriage equality bill are urged to dress to suit the occasion, whether it be rainbow colours or wedding attire. LegaliseLove will also be holding workshops for banner-making leading up to the rally.
