Tammy Smith, right, with her wife Tracey Hepner, left (Stars and Stripes) The US Army has appointed its first-ever openly-gay General. Tammy Smith’s star signifying her new rank was pinned on her shoulder by her wife Tracey Hepner, the Los Angeles Times reports. Stars and Stripes reports that while Gen. Smith acknowledges the significance of her promotion, she is not fixated on making history. "I don't think I need to be focused on that," the 49-year-old said. "What is relevant is upholding Army values and the responsibility this carries."
