Madonna defies St Petersburg's gay ban

Sat 11 Aug 2012 In: International News

Madonna has challenged St Petersburg's "gay propaganda" ban by handing out pink wristbands at her show. At her MDNA tour stop in the Russian city she handed out pink bracelets, while a sign above the stage informed concert-goers that the bracelets showed "tolerance for the gay community". The pop told the crowd "We want to fight for the right to be free," and later revealed the words "No Fear" written on her back and waved LGBT flags. The defiance of the city's anti-gay laws comes just days after Madonna expressed support for the jailed members of feminist Russian punk band, Pussy Riot, by scrawling the group's name on her back at a concert in Moscow. The group is facing three years in jail for high-kicking and dancing in Moscow's main cathedral, singing "Virgin Mary, drive Putin away," in protest at the leader.
