Kerry Wong Gay Auckland designer Kerry Wong has a chance to show his mini collection at NZ Fashion Week after making the top ten of the Westpac Fashion Competition. The 25-year-old now has three weeks to rally for a “gazillion” votes. “The Top 3 Designers with the most votes show their mini collections at NZ Fashion Week which I have only ever dreamed of showing at,” he explains. The Masterton born and raised designer was in the first year of a law degree when he became a fan of Project Runway and thought "Screw law - I wanna do that." With no background in design, he made a life-changing decision and enrolled in a Foundation Course in Design at Massey University to compile a portfolio for submission into the Bachelor of Design programme. He completed the degree with honours at the end of 2010 and has since been a finalist in the Nanogold Competition and won two awards at the New Zealand 2011 Hokonui Fashion Awards his my graduate menswear collection. Wong’s mini collection which has propelled him into the finals of the Westpac Fashion Competition is entitled Sportsthéque and you can check it out and vote for him here. While he is still simply flattered and elated at being in the top ten, Wong says winning would give him invaluable exposure for building his career and profile as a designer. He dreams of having his own international menswear label, or working as a creative director or head product developer for a label and company he loves in the future.
