Vietnamese get on their bikes for Pride

Mon 6 Aug 2012 In: International News

Picture: AFP Vietnam's first-ever gay pride parade has taken place in Hanoi, where cyclists rode though the city streets with balloons and rainbow flags. While they had no official permission, there were no attempts to stop the around 100 people who took part. "There was no intervention, which is a good thing for Vietnam," one of the organisers, Tam Nguyen has told AFP. Nguyen said the parade had helped unite the LGBT community and raise awareness among "curious" onlookers, although many had no idea what the rainbow flag symbolised. While homosexuality is largely ‘taboo’ in the nation, Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong recently said it might be time to consider a change in the law to recognise same-sex marriage – which would make Vietnam the first nation in Asia to do so.
