A Colorado bakery which is refusing to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple has been inundated with outraged emails and protestors with signs such as “let the gays eat cake”. Dave Mullin, 28, and Charlie Craig, 31, say they were shocked when they showed up for a day of cake tasting at the Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, but were turned away by the shop's owner, Jack Phillips. "My first comment was, 'We're getting married,' and he just shut that down immediately," Craig told WPTV. They shared what happened on Facebook, which led to more than 1,000 people sending angry messages to the bakery owner, while protestors have also picketed the shop. "It's just a cake," Mullin told the local station. "We've also had supporters say, 'We don't support gay marriage but not selling a cake to a gay couple is wrong." But Phillips says it's not just a cake to him and he'd rather close up shop before "compromising" his beliefs. "If it came to that point, we would close down the bakery before we would compromise our beliefs so that may be what it comes to... we'll see," Phillips told WPTV. "If gays come in and want to order birthday cakes or any cakes for any occasion, graduations, or whatever, I have no prejudice against that whatsoever," Phillips told CBS. "It's just the wedding cake, not the people, not their lifestyle."
