Key explains how he made vote choice

Tue 31 Jul 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

John Key at the Big Gay Out John Key has explained he has decided to make his own mind up on the issue of marriage equality, because he is Prime Minister and not simply a constituent MP. While the Helensville MP voted against civil unions in 2005, he has since had a change of heart. Initially stating he would at least back any marriage equality Bill through at least its first reading, he has now indicated he is set to support it right through the three readings it needs to be passed in to law. He explains that while during the civil union debate he canvassed his constituents, he feels that as Prime Minister he doesn’t have that luxury. "But in the end you're forced to make a decision pretty much early on, you don't have the luxury of sort of sitting back so much, so I'm more than comfortable with the position I've adopted,” he has told media today.
