Richard Prosser MPs are being grilled about their stance on marriage equality at Parliament today, leading a New Zealand First MP to state that although he has “nothing against gays” he will be voting against the legislation. Richard Prosser says his stance is about preserving the institution of marriage. Meanwhile Deputy Prime Minister said he didn’t believe the issue was that important and he ''thought the problem had been solved'' with civil unions. While most National MPs have not made their views clear, more liberal MPs such as fiercely pro-equality Nikki Kaye will vote for the legislation. The party’s youth wing the Young Nats supports marriage equality and will be lobbying National MPs to do the same. "Our generation overwhelmingly supports marriage equality for all New Zealanders and our Members of Parliament need to vote with that in mind," President Sean Topham says. ''We believe in freedom and equal opportunity for all Kiwis and our generation clearly agrees. Marriage equality is a no brainer.''
