Grindr crashes as athletes pour into London

Mon 23 Jul 2012 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

British tabloid The People claims the arrival of thousands of athletes and their support staff in London for the Olympics caused Grindr to crash. It quotes ‘technical experts’ who say the outage was caused by athletes and others trying to logon to the service all at the same time. Grindr works by displaying the closest 100 users, based on GPS data. One user told the newspaper: “It happened almost as soon as the teams got here. Either loads of athletes were logging on to meet fellow Olympians or were looking to bag a local. “The Grindr system obviously couldn’t cope. It took 24 hours for the app to get back up and running, much to the relief of all concerned.” There are only 20 openly gay or lesbian athletes at the Olympics.
