Anglicans gather in Fiji as gay issues swirl

Fri 6 Jul 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Representatives of the Anglican Church have gathered in Nadi, Fiji, for their General Synod, where the topics of marriage equality and ordination of gay priests will be discussed. Delegates will receive a cultural welcome tomorrow morning, while the three Archbishops will give their addresses on Sunday afternoon. On Tuesday former Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand will speak to the Synod in his capacity as the head of the Church's commission on the ordination and blessing of gay men and women. The Commission has been asked to report its findings in 2014. In the meantime, the diocese of Waiapu, which covers Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay, has put forward a proposal for dioceses which wish to be able to bless same-sex unions to be able to do so, and for gay priests to be ordained. Auckland vicar Glynn Cardy from St Matthew-in-the-City has also asked the Synod to support parishes debating the nature of marriage and how it should be applied to same-sex relationships. Both motions are expected to be addressed next week.
