School's Out hosting self-defence classes

Mon 2 Jul 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

File photo Wellington queer youth organisation School’s Out will run the first of two self-defence lessons this week, and has opened the event up to the wider community. “It is something many of us could benefit from,” says the School’s Out team, which has organised the lessons in an effort to boost the confidence of participants. Former YWCA Positive Action Self Defence tutor Jac Lynch will run the two sessions, which will each be two hours, and held on 4 and 11 July at Zeal. “This is a serious subject but the sessions will be fun,” School’s Out says. “We'll discuss how to keep safe in different situations, as well as learn physical moves including blocking and breaking holds, punching and kicking techniques.” There are 20 places available, with preference going to younger participants.
