France to introduce marriage and adoption equality

Sat 30 Jun 2012 In: International News View at Wayback

Gay couples will soon be able to marry in one of the most romantic places in the world, with France moving to legalise same-sex marriage. The nation's new Socialist government will also legalise adoption for same-sex couples, Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has announced. "The government has made it an objective for the next few months to work on implementing its campaign commitments on the fight against discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity," a statement from Ayrault reads. The nation's head of state President Francois Hollande, who took office last month, had pledged to legalise gay marriage and adoption during his election campaign but had given no time frame. His Socialist party has an absolute majority in parliament. France currently has a variation of civil partnerships and full marriage equality will bring it into line with other EU members Denmark, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden. The law changes are expected to be passed within a year.
