Help getting gay musical to stage sought

Fri 29 Jun 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The creators of a pop rock musical love story about two gay men and a baby are seeking help to ensure it can be staged to its “full and fabulous potential”. Theatre of Love is presenting Day After Night, a new original New Zealand Musical written and composed by Benjamin Cleaver. It’s about two gay men -Harry, a late night drag performer, has a dream he wants a baby, while his partner David can’t think of anything worse. “With everything going on in the world around gay marriage and the quest for equal rights, and also something in New Zealand legislation regarding the adoption laws, I feel it’s a relevant story to be told now. It’s current,” says writer and composer Benjamin Cleaver. Day After Night will be on stage at Auckland’s Basement Theatre for a two week season this September. The team behind it is using Pledge Me crowdfunding to appeal for support to help it stage the musical. “Our company is called Theatre of Love, partly because what we do is out of love,” says Producer and Director James Wenley. “It’s very expensive to put on theatre, especially musicals… so we’re kind of crazy in that regard. So we’re asking for your support, if it’s an idea you believe in or show you’d like to see, please consider supporting us, because we can’t do it without your help.” Theatre of Love is trying to raise $3,000 to cover venue hire, marketing costs, lights, sound and fees for its professional cast and crew. It's already raised just over $500. “I’m in great support of new work, particularly new musical theatre work, which we don’t have a lot of in this country, which I love and passionately believe in. So please support us” says Musical Director Paul Barrett. Watch a video about the production below.
