Complaint about Love Your Condom ad dismissed

Fri 22 Jun 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The ad at the centre of the complaint The Advertising Standards Authority has dismissed a complaint that a Love Your Condom ad from Get It On! is offensive and should not be where children can see it. P. Watson was not happy about seeing the cartoon image of a gay man at a bar looking across at another man with the message ‘Love Your Condom’. “I object to the insinuation of this picture, that the man desired sex with the other and he is reminded to use a condom. What percentage of people using that bus stop would that advertisement be applicable to? And to those not, including, myself, I feel it is offensive. “Being in such a public place, we have no opinion but to see it. I don’t like children being exposed to it.” The Advertising Standards Authority says the fact the ad features gay men is not grounds for a complaint in itself. It says the way the men were depicted, looking at each other in a bar, “did not reach the threshold to be likely to cause serious or widespread offence in the light of generally prevailing community standards”. The Authority says the ad had been prepared with a due sense of social responsibility to consumers and to society, and did not meet the threshold to be in breach of the Advertising Codes.
