Black's play '8' to have NZ premiere in July

Some of the nation’s leading actors are to take part in a read-through of the play 8 from Milk and J. Edgar Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. Robyn Malcolm, Peter Elliot, Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Michele Hine, Cameron Rhodes, Heath Jones, John Davies will all take part in the reading of the play, which is about marriage equality and Proposition 8 in the US. It uses transcripts from the trial and journalist records, along with interviews from the plaintiffs, defendants and proponents involved in the Proposition 8 trial in California. The New Zealand reading of the play is a joint production of Love, Blood and Rhetoric Productions, Unitec's Department of Performing and Screen Arts, The Actors' Program, Maidment Theatre and Rainbow Youth, and is directed by Kacie Stetson. The reading will be held on 11 July at 7.30PM at Maidment Theatre in Auckland. Entry is by donation, with all proceeds going to Rainbow Youth.
