Lack of London Olympic Pride House "a shame"

Mon 18 Jun 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Simon Latimer is an Olympic diving judge A gay New Zealand Olympic diving judge is expressing disappointment at the news there will not be a Pride House at the London Olympics, which begin next month. Simon Latimer says it’s a shame, especially for the athletes who come from less fortunate/liberal countries where their gay rights are heavily repressed. “It would have been a good opportunity for them to potentially express themselves and be made to feel comfortable,” he says. “Hopefully the situation can be salvaged somewhat and a smaller event or function arranged.” The Pride House plan for Clapham Common has been cancelled, reportedly due to a lack of sponsorship. The Pride House concept only began in 2010 at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. It was a place where glbt athletes, coaches, support staff, family, friends and fans could gather.
