Wellington: Ivy finds a new home on Cuba St

Tue 22 May 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Greig and Leon Wilson Wellington gay bar and nightclub Ivy is to reopen in August in a new home on Lower Cuba St, in the old James Smith department store basement. “It’s a fabulous space oozing charm,” say owners Greig and Leon Wilson. “The theme is 1920s cabaret. It will be a bit over the top. Camp, fab and more fun than ever,” they promise. The space is being designed to cater for their Wellington Ivy Cabaret show, while it will also be able to cater for different experiences within the one bar: it will have a quiet drinking and social lounge, a bar area, a dance area and a second function bar. “The venue will have nooks and crannies that will delight and excite. We hope to release the final drawings next week,” the Wilsons say. The venue will be called simply "Ivy". The former venue on Dixon St, which housed Club Ivy, Terrace Bar and Garden Club, is now a Calendar Girls. The couple was going to give up on reopening as they struggled to find a suitable venue, a problem which has now been solved. You can keep up with developments on Ivy’s Facebook page here.
