Prime Minister John Key is sending mixed messages on his stance on marriage equality, now stating he is not opposed to it. Key voted against the Civil Union Bill and has in the past refused to take a position on gay marriage. Yesterday he told media he believed there was ‘no clamour’ for gay marriage in New Zealand, when he was questioned following Barack Obama’s monumental declaration he was in favour of gay marriage. Now Key has told AP he is "not personally opposed to gay marriage" and it was possible Parliament would consider a member's bill at some stage. His statement has been described in some media as following Obama, who made the much stronger declaration, "it is important for me personally to go ahead and affirm that same-sex couples should be able to get married."
